He was ordained in Maynooth in 1958 and received a doctorate in theology in 1961, for a thesis on the Church. He taught Latin in St. Jarlath's College, Tuam, and later was a member of the founding team of the Institute of Religious Education, Mount Oliver, Dundalk, where he lectured in dogmatic theology.
